Posted on Tue, 18 Oct 2016
Question: Our baby boy will turn 5 months on 11oct. from past one month at times, he vigorously shakes his head from side to side as if saying No as gesture. he is able to turn his head to his right but not to the left. Also, gets alerted when we call his name and takes few seconds to maintain eye contact... otherwise, cries, moves his hands, legs etc., when we giggle him on cheeks, chin, hands only then he smiles otherwise doesn't smile on his own.

Doctor suggested that we get bera test done once he turns 5 months

please let me know what you think

Brief Answer:
Get a hearing test done.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Going by the details, it does not seem concerning to me. Indeed it would be a good idea to get a hearing test done. Usually OAE (otoacoustic emissions examination) test is done as a screening test and BERA is done only if OAE gives a 'refer' as a result. I leave the choice upon you whether to go for a OAE or BERA as any one among the two should suffice.

I do not think you need to grow apprehensive. You need to keep talking continuously with the baby and also use gestures and toys in the process. I am not worried about the few seconds delay in establishing eye contact. It is a matter of time before he can be screened for signs of autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
