Hello and welcome,

Given your age and your description, it sounds like you are perimenopausal. When menopause will arrive is hard to predict as you might go on like this for a bit longer.

About the pink/brown very light flow: It is unlikely you are ovulating (as then your period would be more typical for you), but the pink is from a little fresh bleeding and is caused by the fact that you still have some estrogen that is causing the uterine lining to be stimulated somewhat. Brown means some of the blood sat around because of the lack of brisk bleeding.

The starting and stopping is from having an increase in estrogen and then it dropping and this repeating because of lack of ovulation. Ovulation causes a risk in progesterone which finishes the endometrial lining.

I see that you have thyroid disease as you take thyroxine, and this can make periods irregular too, but I am guessing that your periods are dwindling down because of approaching menopause. Don't be surprised though, if you have a heavy period still, but this is less likely now.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.

Your welcome!

*One correction: I meant to write "rise in progesterone" not "risk in progesterone".

In the future, if you would like to ask me a question after this one is closed, you can write my name (or just Dr. Bonnie) in the first line of the question and it will get to me.

Best regards,
