Brief Answer: DEPENDS ON FURTHER FOLLICULAR STUDY. Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for writing to us with your health concern. Would you please tell me a bit more about your history - your normal menstrual cycles, duration of menstrual flow and length of cycles, indication for the follicular study being done. Normally, if your cycles are regular 28 day ones, then ovulation should occur on day 14, at this time, the follicle should measure around 18 -22 mm. So on day 16, you are slightly late. THe follicle measuring 18 mm should rupture in a couple of days, the one measuring 15 mm might just regress. So the chances of twin conception depend on further follicular study. IF the second follicle also grows serially and ruptures, then chances of a twin conception are pretty high. Generally, if this is a cycle where you are trying to conceive naturally, again chances of twins are low. If you have used drugs for stimulation ( clomiphene, gonadotropins ) etc, then chances of twin conception are high . For one single cycle, there are no known percentages, in conceptions from clomiphene, chances of twinning are as high as 30 %. Once I know more of your background and the drugs that were used so far, I can give you more exact figures. All the best. Please feel free to discuss further.

Generally my cycles r 28-29 cycles long with 5-6 days of periods, this is first time i m having multiple follicles although i have had polycystic ovaries before,i m under no medication ,and other indications in follicular study were ff : trace,et:9mm

Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (1 hour later)
Brief Answer: DETAILED BELOW Detailed Answer: Hi, As you are not under any medications in this cycle, mostly the 15 mm follicle will regress. Since when are you trying to conceive ? Please do get serial follicular studies done over the following week, sometimes, women with polycystic ovaries have more than one follicle, but chances of twin conception are still very low.

Today the follicular study readings are et:11.7,ff:trace,one follicle of 21.7 and another 16.4, what do u think ,what r the chances?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (1 hour later)
Brief Answer: FURTHER MONITORING REQUIRED. Detailed Answer: Again, I think that the follicle measuring 21.7 mm will rupture, and the other might regress. You need further monitoring for some time.

Today study shoes both of the follicle rupturd, now what do u think,is there any way to findout if both of them fertilized or not, when at earliest possible to know?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (18 minutes later)
Brief Answer: DETAILED BELOW Detailed Answer: As both the follicles have ruptured ( very unlikely ) - then the chance of twin conception does exist. The earliest you would know is when you skip your period. Before missing your period and detecting a pregnancy, you cannot know if one / both / none of them were fertilized. When you miss your period, and go for an ultrasound scan, two gestational sacs will be seen signifying twin pregnancy, and a single sac indicates one pregnancy - that is the earliest you can know for sure. Take care.

Is there a method to stop pregnancy, like the pills and all
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (5 minutes later)
Brief Answer: DETAILED BELOW Detailed Answer: I dont think that is required, as you are trying to conceive. I pill can be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse to minimize chances of conception, however since you are trying to get pregnant, it would be counter productive.

Counter productive ??? What does this mean, plz explain,i m not ready for a twin pregnancy as i already have kids so i wanted to know instead of realising afterwards when i m pregnant, isnt it better to minimize the chances
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (10 minutes later)
Brief Answer: EXPLAINED BELOW Detailed Answer: Counterproductive means that you are trying to conceive on one hand, and then taking those pills on the other hand. Overall chances of twin pregnancy are still quite low, even if two follicles ruptured. However if you wish to completely avoid the risks, then do not remain sexually active after the free fluid is seen.

Can twin pregnancy be treated if i want single pregnancy, what is the procedure, how long it takes, what r the side effects
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (24 minutes later)
Brief Answer: DETAILED BELOW Detailed Answer: Twin pregnancy cannot be ' treated '. Reduction of one fetus is possible, but it is a risky procedure, done in the first trimester of pregnancy, and it carries the biggest risk of abortion of both the babies, while trying to reduce one.
