What Are The Chances Of Pregnancy After Missing Contraceptive Dosage?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Feb 2015
Question: Hi doctor,

I'm a bit worried:

Usually I'm regular with my period and it should arrive this Saturday but during the first week I've had a "problem".

- I had unprotected sex with my boyfrend and that night I forgot to take my pill (the 2nd of the new blister, after the 7 days of break) before going to bed (like I always do) and I took it only the next day at lunch (around 13-14hours late).
-That night I took on time my 3rd pill, but about 2 and half-3 hours later I had vomit and I didn't took any other pill until the next day (the 4th pill, on time, before going to bed).

I'm worried because I'm afraid "to have missed 2 pills in a row" with the forgetfulness and the vomit.

Moreover on the attached leaf it's written that to forget a pill in the first week could be "dangerous" if you've had an intercourse in the previous 5days, because you're near the break.

Should I worry or am I just overreacting?

Brief Answer:
Pregnancy less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Missing 2 pills- one delayed and other vomited out with an unprotected sex can cause a pregnancy but the chances are less than 5%. There is no need to worry. Stress and anxiety can also cause a delay in the periods.
Just wait a few more days and let your period start naturally. In case there is no bleeding then do get a urine test done to rule out pregnancy before starting with the new pack.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

But how "bad" is taking the pill 14hours later? And how "bad" is having vomit 2-3 hours later? Can the ovulation star again?

Since the forgetfulness we always used barrier method, but the problem is the intercourse we had the day I forgot the pill.

Brief Answer:
Less than 3% chances of pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Taking the pill just 14 hours later is not associated with a failure of more than 2-3 %. Vomit 2-3 hours after taking the pill decreases the efficacy of that pill by half. Still the chances of pregnancy are not more than 3%. This is considered as practically almost zero. Please do not worry.
Hope my answer is helpful.

but the fact that the forgetfulness and the vomit happened in a row, can increase the risk??

Brief Answer:
Still pregnancy is less likely.

Detailed Answer:
The tablet you forgot was not expelled by vomiting. So these are two different episodes that happened on two consecutive days. Still the chances of pregnancy are low. It is best to wait for your periods to begin.
