What Are The Chances Of Miscarriage After 16 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Jun 2016
Question: Hi Dr. XXXXXXX

I am now 16 weeks pregnant and by the grace of God I am fine . just that take too much of stress.

Just wanted to ask:

Does a mother come to know if there is a miscarriage as waiting for three weeks for another check up is quite long and I really become anxious to know if the baby inside is fine .

Does miscarriage happen in second or third trimester.I did not have much of nausea in the first trimester so not sure .

I am taking thyronorm 100 mg empty stomach ,then Kalzium half an hour before lunch , then Ecosprin75 mg after dinner, and Femx 2 hours after dinner followed by Susten to be inserted vaginally .Is the medication correct .

Does high BP affect the the foetus .Also how can I keep BP at check during this time .

Brief Answer:
The medicines you are taking are correct.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
After 16 weeks the chances of miscarriage are too low. The mother may have some symptoms like pain abdomen and bleeding but this is not seen in all the cases. To know that the baby inside is fine you can buy a fetal cardiac monitor - it will help you in hearing the fetal heart beat after 18 weeks.
Miscarriage is less likely in second or third trimester.
The medicines you are taking are correct. High blood pressure decreases the fetal blood flow and can retard the growth of the baby. To keep the blood pressure in check, decrease your salt intake. Start doing a moderate exercise and avoid sugar or fatty foods or things made from refined flour like maida.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Brief Answer:
Fetal heart rate is variable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
At 16 weeks it is less likely to have a sudden silent abortion without any symptoms. It is normal to have a fetal heart rate vary between 120 to 160 beats per minute. There is nothing to worry regarding the variation in the heart rate.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Thanks for your feedback Maam. Few more thing:

Today I was sitting on chair and my small nephew shook the back of the chair on which I was sitting. He is just a small kid so could not say a no.Would it cause a problem.though I am absolutely fine.

Also how well is a baby protected inside the uterus in 17 weeks . Is he still in the uterus.

Also the doctor has stopped my folic acid , instead I take Kalzium and Femx Is that enough.

I am a working woman so travel regularly for work? How important is rest and sleep for the baby?

Is there any risks involved with IUI as my baby is an IUI Conception.

I will be starting with my 5th month coming monday .What safety precautions should i take to ensure a safe delivery

Can I eat Grapes during pregnancy ?

Is outside food permissible during pregnancy

Thanks in advance .

Regards

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
The baby remains ion the uterus well protected by amniotic fluid all around it till the delivery. Minor shakes cannot disturb the baby at all. You need not worry.
The iron supplement that you are taking contains folic acid in it. Additional separate tablet is not needed.
You need eight hours sleep at night and two hours rest in the afternoon for proper growth of the baby. Mild travelling can be done.
IUI conception does not have any additional risk during the pregnancy.
Avoid lifting heavy weights and any strenuous activity that causes pain in the abdomen. Take a healthy food and go for a regular walk.
You can have grapes and outside food if it is prepared hygienically.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
You can take Femex two hours after the lunch also. The jerks do affect more till third month or after seventh month. Right now it is less likely to cause any premature abdominal pains. But do take rest in case you have pain in stomach- lower part after travelling.
If the ultrasound scan comes normal then there is no need to worry. Just have a healthy diet.
The fluttering movement in the tummy can be due to the baby movements or intestinal gas. No need to worry regarding these.
Regards.
