I have a small bump forming on the outside of my upper lip, i feel like it might just be a pimple. How do you know the difference between a herpe and a pimple. Sorry if i sound dumb but i have never been put in this situation before. I am extermly nervouse as i have a wife and daughter. Also distraught as i have not kissed them since this happened

Brief Answer:
Multiple painful or itchy vesicles.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.

Usually herpes presents with painful or itchy or burning multiple water filled lesions (vesicles). They usually subside within 5-7 days.
Single bump may be due to canker sores or mucus cysts. You can get it examined by your doctor or send clear photos of same.It is unlikely to be herpes.
Unlikely to get herpes from the act mentioned.
You can lead a normal life.

You are using the word "unlikely" so until i am 100% sure should i not kiss my wofe and daughter. Also what should i do to get rid of if. I was tested 7 days after exposure and they all came back negative. Should i go and be retested again and when.

Answered by Dr. Bharatesh Devendra Basti (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Go for HSV tests to relieve your anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query. Just by looking at lesion I cannot say with 100% surety. I can only talk about probabilities.
The test done at 7 days is not very sensitive to pick it up as not all antibodies would have been formed then. 45 days is ideal to pick it up. So try getting it done now.
You can get tested for HSV 1&2 IgM & IgG antibodies now .
You can forget about the episode if negative. It is most likely to come negative.
You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you

If this test comes back negative do i need to go back for any further testing or will this be conclusove as most sites say you have to wait 8 weeks for conclusive results. Sorry for so manyquestions you can see i am overly concerned
doctor
Answered by Dr. Bharatesh Devendra Basti (6 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Tests at 45 days would be sufficient.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.

With the given exposure, lesion there is least or no possibility of HSV.So the tests after 45 days would be sufficient to be conclusive.
You can allay fears if negative. No need to do any further testing unless there is a next exposure, but until then you need not be concerned.
You can get back for any clarification.
