Posted on Sat, 25 Jun 2016
Question: Patient is male 80 years old. He had a open heart surgery 4 years ago and also has stents. The biggest issue with patient is he is very inactive. I have bought a sitting bike for him. He does not use it. so is it best to walk for him for activities?
He is under medications.
All his life he took it easy. So my question is can exercise on bike cause more harm and exertion or heart attack or he just shud take it easy?
Thanks

Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

First of all taking medical treatment with a healthy lifestyle (including physical activity and exercising) will have a positive effect on his overall health and will increase his life expectancy.

Secondly it's not very important what kind of physical activity and exercise he will do. Exercising moderately on a daily basis with a sitting bike (even by walking if he can't use it) will have a positive effect on his health.

It's not recommended to quit all forms of physical activity and exercise. This will have a negative impact on his health.

Hope this will be of help!
Wish you health!

Thank You doctor. My only concern is if he uses a sitting bike, and use it slowly how many minutes per day is good? also will the bike create any exertion on him or will it cause heart attack to him simply because he never been to gym all his life?
now alternatively, if he walks, how many minutes per day walking is good?
Thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Since he has never been to gym I would like to recommend starting with 20 minutes of walking each day and gradually increasing to the recommended duration of 1 hours of walking every day.

Only after achieving this goal he may start with 3 -5 minutes of cycling per day increasing gradually to 15 minutes per day.

Hope this will be of help!
Wish you and your family health!
