What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission With Open Wound?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Sep 2014
Question: Hi - I have a question on HIV Transmission. I was in a shop in XXXXXXX XXXXXXX When I was trying to open the door, the glass door broke into pieces.

I had few cuts in my feet because of this. There was one cut on top of my toe - A part of the skin was off and it was bleeding for a few minutes. It is not a deep cut, but there was bleeding and I did not find any broken glass there.

There was another cut where a small glass piece had penetrated by foot. There was not much bleeding and I removed the glass piece.I believe that the glass did not go very deep

This is my concern. There were multiple people in the store. I am worried about this:

1. In the first cut on the top of my toe, what if the glass piece had ricocheted ( bounced back) from someone in the store and what if they were HIV positive?

2. In the second cut on the bottom of my foot, what if someone had stepped on that glass piece seconds before I had stepped on it and what if they had HIV?

I am worried and anxious about this. Please let me know if HIV transmission is possible this way. Thanks for your time and help on this.

Brief Answer:
Very very less chances

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthcareMagic .

There are very less chances or even say it is unlikely that HIV may transfer like this. Because if somebody with infection has stepped on that glass that blood will be dried off. If you didn't see any fresh blood over the glass before you got injury either above or below then no problem.

Don't worry. If you are still anxious then you may get Hiv rna test 2 weeks after likely exposure. That will be conclusive and remove all doubts in you.

Hope I have answered your query . If any further queries are there I would love to help.

I think you did not read my post fully. The glass broke when I opened the door. So, it is all immediate and there is no time for anything to dry up. In my 1st cut, I was asking if the glass touched someone on its way and then cut me. In my 2nd cut, I am asking if another person had stepped on it seconds before I stepped on it.

Brief Answer:
no risk

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I had read your post completely first time also and understand your concern.

I am really sorry I couldn't put my view clear to you.

In both the circumstances which you said there is very very less chances of transmission though some infected person has stepped on or the glass touched a infected person . Less then 0.0003 % . Or you may take it as nil.

I suggested you to get tested after 2 weeks only to remove doubt from you. Always laboratory findings are more believed. Since there is so less chance of transmission we generally don't advice prophylaxis. As these drugs are strong and carry there own serious side effects. And also we are not sure that exposure was there or not.

Hope I have been helpful .

OK. Makes sense. I also read everywhere on the internet that is almost impossible. Should I take it as 0% and move on or should I test after 2 weeks - That is what is not clear.
