What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: Hello Doctor!

I have questions about HIV. I had oral sex with someone (insertive fellatio only), and have been concerned. I got a 4th gen test 5 weeks post exposure and it was negative. I have been having diarrhoea and swollen neck at the front (although i visited a doctor and he said that it is unlikely swollen glands, but rather swollen muscle). Are these symptoms related? How good is the accuracy of my test and do i need a retest?

Brief Answer:
Not related to HIV and no further test is required.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,

Welcome to HCM.

The risk of getting HIV from oral sex is very less as compared to vaginal or anal sex and 4th gen. test after 5 weeks is negative which is highly reliable and accurate so don't worry about HIV and as such no need to go for any further test.

The symptoms are also non specific to HIV. They might be due to some other infection or muscle spasm as your doctor said so follow the treatment regime as per the advice. You can go for repeat test for your satisfaction after 3 months. Be relaxed and move ahead in life happily.

Thank You

Thank you for your previous answer. Im wondering about the conclusiveness of the test. Different doctors have different conclusions about the window period. What is the percentage accuracy of 4th gen test @5th week?

Brief Answer:
It is 90% accurate and conclusive.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,

Welcome back and thanks for follow-up.

The window period for HIV varies from 15 days to 3 months and 4th gen test is 90% accurate after 5 weeks so you need not to doubt on the result. Get tested again after 3 months and the result will sure come in your favour so be relaxed and move ahead
