What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Non Penetrative Sex?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 May 2015
Question: Hello

I was in a sexual contact with sex worker two days ago. We used protection orally and vaginal sex. After the sex was done the worker grabbed a wet towel and started to clean my penis from bottom up then when she got to the condom she stopped then slowly used the wet towel to remove the condom up and off my penis. I am worried that in doing so she rubbed the vaginal fluids on the head of my penis and the tip. Would this be a risk factor of catching HIV? Just trying to understand if I am at risk.

Brief Answer:
HIV risk while cleaning or removing condom is negligible

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

You had your penetrative sex only with protection.
HIV is highly fragile virus and can not live outside the body fluids not more than few seconds.
Touching your penis with fingers after having touched her genitals while cleaning or removing the condom carries an almost nil risk for HIV. Nothing to worry. HIV would not pass in this way. Moreover all sex workers are not necessarily be a HIV positive women. As they are aware of their risk in their job for HIV, they will always be very careful and never go for unprotected sex and used to have periodic check ups.

Brief Answer:
DNA PCR is preferable. Conclusive by 4 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

HIV PCR test usually sensitive as early as first week on wards, but more conclusive after 4 weeks.
RNA PCR are two types .
1. Qualitative- useful for diagnosis of HIV
2. Quantitative- useful to monitor HIV disease
DNA PCR is only qualitative and used for diagnostic purpose.
Moreover usually these PCR tests can detect or rule out only HIV 1 infection and not HIV 2 unless it is mentioned specifically, whereas Antibody test can detect both HIV 1 and 2 but becomes conclusive only by 12 weeks.
HIV 1 infection is the commonest (nearly 99.5%) everywhere in the world except in certain parts of XXXXXXX The prevalence of HIV 2 is less than 0.5%.

Hello I have taken the PCR rna test at nine days past exposure. Would you recommend taking the test at 12 days again. Or nine days is conclusive
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sankaranantham Murugan (5 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Antibody test after is conclusive for both HIV and HIV 2

Detailed Answer:
Hi welcome back.

RNA PCR is sensitive as early as 1 week after the contact, but considered more conclusive by 4 weeks. More over it can either confirm or rule out only HIV 1 infection and not HIV 2 infection unless it is specified also for HIV 2.
Antibody test after 12 weeks after the exposure can rule out both HIV and HIV 2 (very rare).
