What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Injection Site?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: Hi,

today I went to a clinic and had a blood sugar finger prick test, thanks God it was normal, however I noticed the nurse just gave me a cotton to push on the site of the prick, but she didn't cover it with plaster.

So I applied hand sanitizer and covered it with tissue paper at the doctor office. after about ten minutes I went to the grocery store, at the cashier there was a person before me there opening plastic bags to put his stuff, when my turn came I touched the plastic bags with my hand, which was touched before by the man and I remember but not sure that I noticed something wet, on the bag itself, or another place I don't remember, so I assumed the man licked his fingers to help him open the bags.

So I stopped opening the bags, and started to try to remember with which hand I opened the bag, I was scared that if that man had HIV, I might have touched his saliva with my pricked finger, which seemed at that moment dry with no blood.

Is there any HIV risk from that route ?
when I went back home I squeezed my finger and an extremely tiny blood drop came out. Does that mean that my prick was not healed and closed when I touched the bag ? or it means it was dry and closed but since I squeezed it it pushed blood upward and opened the wound ?

Thank you
doctor

Brief Answer:
There is absolutely no risk of hiv transmission

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms

First and foremost let me reassure you that there is absolutely no risk of HIV transmission.
When finger is pricked with lancet for collection of blood, there is formation of platelet plug within 3 minutes and it seals off the wound. Saliva of HIV infected individual has low viral load and exposure to it does not cause transmission of HIV. Also your wound was already sealed with fibrin and platelet plug.

Attempt by you to squeeze the finger had lead to disruption of fibrin/platelet plug resulting in bleeding.

So there has been no risk of HIV transmission.

Be relaxed.

Wishing you a very happy and healthy life
