Question: Hi! I take 'Stamlo Beta' tablet once daily after breakfast & 'Lipikind 10' tablet once daily after dinner since last three years or so as per house physician's advice. My last lipid profile (tested in November' 2013) is given below for your reference pl.
Total cholestrol - 125, HDL - 31, LDL - 83, Chol : HDL - 4.03, VLDL- 11, Triglycerides- 135, Sugar (fasting) - 107, Hb+ - 12.7, ESR - 48, Creatinine - 0.84, Uric acid - 5.0 & Urea - 22.3.
Normally, i feel nothing unusual or discomfort at the age of 53+ yrs. & remain active. My weight is around 75 kgs & height is 167.5 cm. My diet is so far normal but with inclination towards sweet & sometimes fat items. I just want to know any side-effects of such medicines, consuming since long a period. Can it be discontinued now ? I quit smoking in March' 2014. No habit of alcohol. Your valued suggestion is being sought in my case. Thanking you.

Dear XXXXXXX
Greetings from health care magic!!! I am Dr Thakker and shall be answering your question. I will try my best to answer your questions.

I have read your clinical history and reports. You have an excellent lipid profile. However I have a few more suggestions with regards to HDL, fasting sugar and weight.

HDL...preferably should be more than 40. I would suggest you to exercise to build the good cholesterol HDL. This will also help you to lose weight and control sugar.

Fasting sugar of 107...this is a borderline number. I would want you to check PLBS and hba1c levels as well. you could be in the pre-diabetes state and this needs timely intervention.

Weight of 75kg...this is more for your height. I would recommend you to exercise at a gym 5 times a week or walk 30 mins daily for 5 days a week. This will also improve insulin sensitivity and improve your sugar levels.

Since you are hypertensive, you have to take stamlo beta daily. We cannot do away with it completely or else it can lead to strokes. This medicine can cause leg swelling, constipation, tiredness as a side effect. If they are affecting you badly, we can have other safer alternatives.

Lipikind is a statin used to alter your lipid profile. If you are ready to embrace a strict low fat and low calorie diet coupled with exercise, we may be able to stop this medicine in future. So the ball is in your hands now. A consultation with a clinical dietition will help you in this regards.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker.
