What Are Chances Of Pregnancy Inspite Of Having I Pill After Umprotected Sex?

Question: We do not want to have a second child and hence I write my concern. My wife got her periods on 29th of May and her periods lasted only for 3 to 4 days this time. Usually she has periods for 5 to 7 days. Just for assumptions we take 3 to 4 days. We had intercourse on the 6th,7th,8th,9th,10th,11th of April. The issue is that the condom tore on a couple of occasions and we do not remember which days it tore. I am very tensed as I do not want a second child. We got scared and she had a ipill on the 11th evening. She is currently breast feeding our 1 year 3 month daughter. Assume we had unprotected sex all these days what are her chances of getting pregnant. When is the earliest we will know if she is not pregnant. We are at a lot of unease right now. Please do let us know the likelyhood basis the ipill consumed and basis the days of intercourse post the periods.

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Firstly, I presume that the last period of your wife was on the 29th of April assuming a typo error. If your wife has regular periods, ovulation would occur around mid-cycle (always two weeks before the onset of the next period ) and this corresponds to the last dates when you had intercourse. As she took the emergency contraception at that time, she should be well protected.

Now, the only way to know if this was successful is to wait for the next normal period, which could get delayed by a week or two due to the pill. If she does not see her period by then, further investigation and a consultation is needed for further management. You can also get a blood test for pregnancy done about three weeks after the last time of contact.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

1.How many days is the minimum time frame for her to be in periods. I have assumed 3 or 4 days. Can it be lesser.?

2.Does breast feeding or having a small baby make her more prone to becoming pregnant.?

3.Are her chances a lot to get pregnant in between the 5th of May and 8th of May?

4.She had a ipill on 11th so between 8th to 11th is she safe?

5.Should she have a abortion pill to be safe? Can you recommend a dosage?

Please do reply the above points

Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

Here are your answers.

1. The duration of the menstrual flow can vary from cycle to cycle even in normal states occasionally and more so in a breast-feeding woman. You can know how many days your wife menstruated by asking her.

2.Breast feeding is in fact, considered to be a natural method of contraception as it hinders ovulation. Though, often, pregnancies do occur in lactating women who never attained menstruation after delivery as ovulation occurs.

3. Her chances of conception on the dates mentioned are less if she has 30-day cycles.

4. Emergency contraception taken within the stipulated time offers very good and almost complete protection and thus, she should be safe.

5. Abortion pills should be taken only after a confirmed pregnancy under medical supervision. This is not the appropriate time to take such medication; only after a pregnancy has happened.

Hope your queries have been clarified. Please contact for further information. I will be ready to help.

She does not remember her period time hence please tell me minimum time of a period.

She is not willing to do a blood test so when can I give her a pregnancy test and rule out the pregnancy.

She breastfeeds but very less and as I said she had the ipill on 11th and we had intercourse between the 6th and 11th all days. I am quite worried at this point. Can you please see dates again and confirm her period start date was 29th april.

Brief Answer:
Detialed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing again.

Here are your answers-

-The duration of a period can vary from 3-5 days normally.

-You can test for pregnancy through a HPT 3-7 days after the due date for the next period, in case she misses it. you need to take a fresh early morning sample of urine. As she has taken the emergency pill, her next period may get delayed and this has to be kept in mind.

-Let me clarify that ovulation has to be counted back from the onset of the period; ovulation occurs 14 days prior to the onset of the next period. If your wife expects her next period on the 29th of May, it means that she may have ovulated on the 14th or 15th of May and if this is so, she is safe.

Hope all your queries have been clarified. If you need any further information, please feel free to contact. I will be available for help.

Wish you good health.

My wife is claiming she got her periods. Her tummy is hurting she is feeling week and cold. I want to be doubly sure is this really periods or is this a sign of pregnancy.

Reason I ask is because she had an ipill on the 11th of May and today is 22nd. I thought if a ipill is taken the periods are delayed.

She had got her last periods on 29th April which went on for 3 to 4 days then how come she got this bleeding. Please can you clarify because I hope this is not pregnancy.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be withdrawal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

As I had mentioned already, emergency pill can cause withdrawal bleeding about a week after use and this seems to be the likely possibility here, provided she is always regular with her cycles. The bleeding usually continues for a couple of days. If it is persisting, she needs medical attention and further evaluation. Her symptoms are not specific to pregnancy.

You are right in the fact that the next normal period is usually delayed when an emergency pill is used. You can wait for a week after she is due before going for further help.

Hope your query is clarified. Please contact for further information. I will be available to help.

She is saying she is pretty certain this is like her period symptoms. She got her periods on time or a little early. Usually she gets it 5 days early this time it is 7 days early. The tummy cramp is like periods she is saying.

Is this because of the IPILL that she got these symptoms. ?

Are these periods or is this not periods?

What is the possibility of her being pregnant if these symptoms are there?

You wrote if she continues bleeding she needs further investigation. Why is that. Is this because she is pregnant and something is wrong in the pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for your query.

Here are your answers-

-Use of emergency pill can cause a painful and heavy period in view of the excess hormone contained.
-As she has 25-day cycles as you said, it is more likely that she is into her period.
-The possibility of pregnancy is very unlikely in the current scenario.
-If the bleeding is persistent, she may need to be evaluated for the cause which can vary from a persistent hormonal imbalance as a side effect of the pill, to the last possibility, pregnancy. It is very unlikely that she should be pregnant under the present circumstances.

Hope your doubts are clarified. Please contact if you need any more information. I will be available to help.

Hello,

Thanks for contacting us.

Here are your answers-

-Emergency contraceptive pill intake can create all sorts of hormonal imbalance in view of the high dose contained in it and as a result, you may not be able to make out a normal period from a withdrawal bleed. It is not a hard and fast rule that everyone who had the pill should respond in the same way, variations do occur.
-Yes, such symptoms can happen in pregnancy only in one condition, a chemical pregnancy, where an abortion occurs even before a pregnancy is suspected. If you can get the serum beta-hCG titres estimated now, you can know for sure if it is a pregnancy. This, I think, is a remote possibility.

Hope your queries have been answered. Please contact if you need any more information. I will be glad to answer.
