Question: I have had a neurogenic bowel since I was 18 years old I am now 40 years old and having problems this point can you help me with any answers! A drunk driver hit me when I was 18 years old rendering me paralyzed thankfully only for a short nine months leaving me with a neurogenic bowel and bladder as well as spinal cord injuries relating to my bowel I haven't had any problems with my bladder however in the last 3 to 4 years I would say my bowels have been giving me quite a problem Since my accident I have had to digitally stimulate an order to pass any stool not all the time but frequently in the last three years I would say every bowel movement I need to digitally stimulate. In the last year or so I have noticed a yellowish clear sticky mucus clinging onto the prolapsed rectum that I have or at least I think that's what it is a prolapsed rectum. I started to see a colonic specialist that sticky yellow mucus subsided a lot if not just about went away but now I have a clear odorless mucus constantly dripping from my bowels and sometimes there is bright red blood present not a lot just stop I do get brief moments of time where the mucus does not come out it seems to only happen when I really need to pass some stool or if I have a colon that is full of gas. My gastroenterologist recently did a SITZ study on my bowels I swallowed a pill that had 25 markers in it and followed up with about five or six x-rays to show how the markers were moving through my bowels I'm waiting for the results of that study it took eight days for me to get all of the markers out. The report said I have fecal maternal air seen throughout my colon. They have not recommended a colonoscopy as of yet which I'm glad I'm afraid to get one! My diet is very good I eat gluten-free only I am a vegetarian however I do eat fish from time to time I take probiotics on a regular basis and a lot of oils such as vitamin EE vitamin B vitamin a vitamin D any oil that I can take I do The only thing that seems to help my bowels is getting a colonic on a regular basis which my doctor is okay with that I would be really grateful for any answers you could help me with it's the weekend and I'm stressed out I just want to know something I'm afraid I might have cancer or tumor or sonething like that of some sort I'm freaking out basically I can provide photographs of the report on the SITZ study I don't know if that helps thank you kindly in advance for your help

Brief Answer: The discharge could be due to Proctitis Detailed Answer: Hi Welcome to Healthcare-Magic Greetings of the day Let me first reassure you that there is nothing seriously wrong with you based on your clinical history. Also I would be giving you most likely cause for the symptoms you are facing. As you have developed neurogenic bowel that is incomplete sensation of bowel fullness and incomplete evacuation. This incomplete evacuation leads to retained stools especially in colon. Longer the stools stay in colon may water is reabsorbed from it and fomentation by bacteria. This causes the stools to be hard and giving the appearance colon is filled with gas. Stools retained for longer time in colon leads to Inflammation of colon and rectum. It is this inflammation of rectum causing Proctitis which must be causing the peculiar discharge which you are facing. DigitalDigi Evacuation causes trauma to the anal orifice along with the hard stools coming out could have caused a small ulcer at the anal opening called fissure which could be the source of bleeding. Exact cause will depend on careful examination and assessment by Surgeon. Apart from digital evacuation it's advisable to have retention enema with Normal saline and Glycerine which will help in complete evacuation of stools and may help. I hope it helped In case you require any further assistance, will be glad to assist you. Wishing you happy and healthy life. Take care Best Regards Dr Deepak Kishore MBBS, MS, MCH Consultant Surgeon

Thank you so much for replying so quickly wow I feel so much better right now I figured that's what it was and figured my doctor when she followed up with me would tell me that I have tried at the Fleet saline enemas they don't work that good for me my doctor agreed it was okay for me to get colonics twice a week they work phenomenally Plus for 10 years after my accident I was on narcotic pain medication which further causes constipation right now I don't take anything except for Tylenol three which yes is a narcotic but it's a low-dose my back pain is great as I have Harrington rods placed in my back is there anything I can do over the weekend to stop this dripping stuff from my anus? I Literally can't do anything without going through three or four pads in a couple of hours plus the prolapse doesn't help it makes me feel like I have to poop when I don't. Again thank you for your prompt reply I'm glad I found this app

I understand a sodium phosphate enema can be given at home I just have a hard time doing them because it leaks out and it's pretty messy I'm thinking about ordering one of those colonic beds my husband and I are I need to do something about this again thank you for your answer I do have one more question I'm not one for drinking a lot of water it makes me gag to the point where I almost throw up I do try Gatorade at times but that too sugary I was thinking about doing an IV hydration therapy so I can be hydrated all the time because I know I am dehydrated I do my best to drink as much water as I can but I know I don't drink enough what is your opinion on IV hydration therapy as a doctor

Brief Answer: Iv hydration will not be helpful Detailed Answer: Hi Dear Ms Iv hydration will only take care of intravascular volume. It's very important to ensure oral intake of water which ensures soft stools. Iv hydration will definitely not help in making the colonic content soft. Consuming high fiber diet and ensuring water intake of 2 to 3 liter a day are also important. You can also try Foley catheter number 16 which is self retaining after inserting it inside the rectum for 5 to 6 cm and inflating the ballon with 10 ml of distilled water. It will also prevent leakage of enema fluid. Do get back anytime for any assistance. Take care Regards Deepak
