Suggest Ways To Terminate Pregnancy
Question: my girlfriend has missed her period by a week. We had sex 2 weeks ago. If she is pregnant and she does not want a baby, can anything be done to avoid the pregnancy safely. She does not want a baby and since it is early days wants to know if any medicine can make her have her periods and hence not be pregnant anymore.

Firstly if you have had sex 2 weeks back nad she is already delayed by a week , then it is to be understood that she was in her fertile period and she may get pregnant.
It is however necessary to confirm the pregnancy first which can be done with a simple urine pregnancy test kit easily available over the counter.
If the test is positive , indicating that she is pregnant, then next step would be ascertain that pregnancy is inside the uterus or is an ectopic pregnancy ( outside in the tubes). If ectopic then she would probably require a surgical intervention in form of laparoscopy , but if the pregnancy is inside uterus , then she can be easily made to undergo an abortion with medical methods.
But firstly get a urine pregnancy test done and then you may review with the report.

If she is pregnant, when can the abortion be carried out. I mean when is the best time to have the abortion, since the missed period. By best time I mean the safest time.
Is this a simple procedure and does it need hospitalization. Could you kindly explain the procedure so I can discuss it with her.

If she turns out to be pregnant and Ultrasound confirms an intrauterine pregnancy then she would be around 5 weeks gestation and she can opt to undergo medical abortion with medicines itself. It is safe till 7 weeks of pregnancy with the medicines.
But this has to be supervised by a physician, as there are chances that she may experience heavy bleeding during the process and may have dizziness and weakness as well.
The procedure involves to take,:-
1. Tab mifepristone 200mg stat orally,
2. then after 36 hrs to take 800mg of tab misoprostol ( 4 tabs of 200mg) stat orally.

3. she should take 400mg of misoprostol after every 4 hrs till maximum dosage of 2000 is completed every 4 hrly.
She would experience bleeding and pain and may pass a fleshy material possibly a gestational sac during the procedure and her abdominal cramps /pain would relieve suddenly after passage of the same, indicating that she has aborted.
then the bleeding would reduce slowly , but it may continue for a week though in decreased flow.
A follow up Ultrasound after 1 week would be required to confirm completion of abortion. This procedure has to be supervised and if anytime she feels bleeding is in excess , she must report to the physician.
