Suggest Ways To Manage The Side Effects Of Hysterectomy

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: My mother has undergone Hysterectomy in the year 2012 for uterus Fibroid. Before suggesting the operation, doctor had treated her with medicines and finally said that operation is needed.

In recent days, I observed that my mother get frequent urine infection and while investigating on it I found that Hysterectomy is not required for Uterus Fibroid and we can control it with medicines.

I am now feeling guilt for not asking doctor the proper reasons for operation and also for not taking second opinion. I feel at the age of 47 it could have been avoided as she was close to her menopause.

When I read about hormonal imbalance and risk of cardiovascular disease, I really feel sad for going with operation.

Kindly advice on how can I ensure that she is at reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and any other side effect of Hysterectomy.

Brief Answer:
healthy diet and calcium and multivitamin tablets are advisable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to HCM,

I can understand your concerns,

As you told that your mother had undergone hysterectomy for fibroid.

If there is no much symptoms because of fibroid. We wait if patient is near menopause. But symptoms like heavy bleeding or big fibroid, in my suggestion should be removed.

After hysterectomy patients experience same symptoms as they experience during menopause.

As you told that your mother is near menopause, chances of side effects (cardiovascular and bone weakness)because of hysterectomy at reproductive age is more than perimenopause.

I advise that she should do exercise daily, healthy diet including soya, proteins.daily calcium tablets to reduce risk of bone weakness. Multivitamins tablet.

Hormones are not prescribed unless she experiences symptoms like dryness in gential area, mood changes, hot flashes as hormone replacement therapy has side effects.

Hope it helps.

Feel free to ask further.

Thanks.
