I was up all night with diarrhea. real bad. I had it before but nothing that bad.

Transient.

That is transient only. Whenever you are started on Metformin, you start getting this side effect.
However, it is transient. Carry on the medicine, and it would go away with in a week or two.
If it persists, you would need to change the medicine.
