relaxation techniques, realistic thinking, medication, therapy

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Panic attacks are one type of panic disorder.

At the time of an attack , doing relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation would help.
Identifying scary or alarming thoughts which lead to overestimating potential problems or castastrophizing (imaging the worse will happen), thinking through these thoughts may help.

Then need to use treatment to reduce the number of attacks.
There are different types of treatment, one or more than one can be used.
(1)Medication- The SSRI family of medication is the first line of medication that can be used.

This includes medications such as citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, setraline, paroxetine.

One of these medications would work better than the xanax to help with your panic and can be prescribed by your family doctor if needed.

(2)Therapy- particularly cognitive behavioral therapy- this type of therapy helps persons understand how certain thoughts/ beliefs/distortions lead to exaggerated emotional responses and behavioral results

Can be used alone or with medication but combining the two works best

Usually takes the form of weekly sessions for up to 4 months
