Suggest Treatment When Having High Bilirubin Levels And Itchy Rash

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: I'm 27 years old. I recently took a liver panel test all other levels except my Bilirubin were normal. My Bilirubin read 1.5 mg. I had a stomach ultrasound that came back normal. I have noticed yellowing of my eyes and I have developed a itch with rash. I do have mild stomach pain that comes and goes on my left side and sometimes near heart. I am a little tired as well. Within the last month started taking Prilosec and Xanax for anxiety. Cholesterol and all other blood tests are normal. What should I do from here and should I be concerned? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Gilbert's syndrome / medications as possible causes

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concern.

I have noted that your bilirubin level is slightly elevated. There are 2 main explanations for that:
- Gilbert's syndrome, which is a benign hereditary condition characterized by slightly elevated bilirubin level
- medications you've been taking

I advise to repeat testing of liver function (bilirubin and transaminases) after 4 weeks to see changes.

I also want to know about previous bilirubin reports for comparison.

Hope it was of help!

Thank you!
1. I do not have previous Bilirubin test results.
2. I am scheduled to take another blood tests in a couple of weeks. (What would they be looking for? If the levels increase/ decrease what would this indicate? What would be the appropriate course of action after?)
3. How accurate is the stomach ultrasound in detecting pancreatic cancer? Right now the concern of pancreatic cancer is greatly concerning me (I am the father of two young boys and my wife is due with a third child this August)
4. Any comforting words would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Following answer to your queries...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back!

It's a normal procedure to repeat the tests after a couple of weeks. If the results will be back normal than the high bilirubin levels are due to medications you may have taken (paracetamol for example).

If theresults show again a high level of bilirubin than this is related to XXXXXXX syndrome, which is a benign disorder.

You shouldn't worry about pancreatic cancer, only high levels of bilirubin isn't enough. You have no clinical and imagery data to suggest for it.

Abdominal ultrasound is a good examinations to exclude pancreatic cancer on this clinical setings.

However to remove any doubt from you I would recommend to do also amylase and lipase levels together with bilirubin.

Hope this will be of help!
