Question: I have been diagnosed with iron deficient anemia. A few months ago, my blood tests showed a hemoglobin of 11.6 and ferritin level of 9. Today hemoglobin is 11.2 and ferritin level of 21. Why is ferritin level going up but hemoglobin going down? How long does it take the ferritin level to increase to a normal range?

Brief Answer:
ferritine is the storage form of iron.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern. You have iron deficiency anemia. You are takin iron supplements. Ferritine is the storage form of iron. So with iron supplements its level is increased. Don't worry about hemoglobin. It is same. There can be mild instrument and laboratory variations.
Uou should also rule out any bleeding.
Iron should be taken to replenish the ferritine storage. So you need to take supplements till your serum iron and ferritin level becomes normal.
Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.

Bleeding has been ruled out so far via stool sample. How long can it take for the ferritin level to become normal?

Brief Answer:
Six months after hemoglobin become normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
You should take iron treatment at least six months after your hemoglobin level becomes normal. You should take iron rich food like dates, green leafy vegetables, dry fruits, jeggary etc. Repeat your hemoglobin level after one month of treatment. When your hemoglobin level becomes normal then you should take treatment for six months.

Ferritine level only is not reliable indicator because it is also an acute phase reactant. Sp its level also increase in inflammation. So monitor your response with hemoglobin, s iron level and ferritin level.
