Brief Answer:
Good Morning!

Detailed Answer:
Congratulations on your decision to improve your health! I imagine you are very frustrated as you say you "diet" and "exercise" but do not get anywhere!

Also, you are interested in the medication duromine, a medication recently approved for weight loss. Now, the real secret is in total lifestyle change the correct way. Lets discuss medication first.

Duromine is a combination of phentermine (a stimulant) and topiramate, a drug used in other conditions with a side-effect of weight loss. When someone tries and fails at weight loss, a short term trial on a medication while learning and practicing lifestyle change can be very motivating. I see no issue with it in your case barring clearance from your family physician whom you will need to get your prescription from. We do not prescribe medications on HCM.

Next, you need to learn to eat correctly to stimulate your metabolism and boost your nutrient dense foods. There are nutrients that help with weight loss as well such as vitamin D. Get up in the am, have a cup of green tea and a high protein breakfast with a multivitamin.

I don't have a height or weight on you, but most of my female patients follow a 1200 calorie meal plan and my males 1500-1800 calories; optimally they should be personalized. Timing of eating makes a difference. No calories three hours before bed.

Exercise should be a minimum of 150 minutes per week. It is important that you do a 5 min. warm up and a 5 minute cool down and 20-30 minutes of continuous exercise/no breaks. Choose fast walking, biking, swimming, treadmill, elliptical machine. Try to vary your workout alternating days of muscle groups you work on.

I hope I have sent you in a proper direction and you can get your prescription for Duromine, establish an exercise program, and guidance on a workable meal plan for you. Sample meal plans are available from other dietitians in your area and joining a support group is also a good idea. Good luck to you. Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN, Registered Dietitian
