Question: My almost 17 year old son (6' 250 lbs) came home from school with flu like symptoms. Vomiting, tired and a bit of a fever. He wanted to take Pepto Bismol but I said no. Is there something else he can take to settle his stomach or is he old enough to take Pepto now?

Brief Answer:
Metoclopramide or domperidone will probably help

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

you haven't described the symptoms in detail but I assume he had a runny nose, malaise and cough (?). If that's his case then he is likely suffering from a respiratory tract infection but nobody could say whether it's influenza or not without specific testing.
He can take some metoclopramide or domperidone to relieve his nausea and vomiting. He should check his temperature at least twice a day (morning and late evening) and if things get worse seek the help of his doctor, because with the same symptoms he could have serious conditions like pneumonia.
I don't believe pepto-bismol would help. Pepto-bismol is contraindicated in children under 12, so he could take it, but I would advice against it.
I hope I've helped!
If you'd like more information, please ask and I'll be glad to answer.

Kind Regards!

He has no respiratory symptoms. Just nausea, vomiting and a bit of a fever. And he is tired.

Brief Answer:
the symptoms are not specific

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the symptoms you mentioned are not specific. It could be many things. Various viral illnesses may cause the same clinical picture. Unless he develops a very high fever or severe symptoms, a symptomatic treatment should suffice - as described in my previous answer.
Make sure he gets enough fluids but just don't bloat him or you'll make his vomiting worse. He should also avoid fatty foods until he feels better.

I hope he gets better soon!
Kind Regards!

I gave you specifics and wanted to know if my 16 year old son could use adult Pepto Bismol. You didnt really say yes or no.You did give me some other options that the pharmacist said weren't available in the US.
I doubt I will use this service again.

Brief Answer:
My answer contained all the info you asked for

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I specifically answered about pepto-bismol "I don't believe pepto-bismol would help. Pepto-bismol is contraindicated in children under 12, so he could take it, but I would advice against it.". This is because this drug is not really supposed to help with your son's symptoms.
Metoclopramide is available with the brand names Reglan, Maxolon and Metozolv - all approved by the FDA (food and drug administration). Perhaps you should check with another pharmacist! Domperidone is not available in the USA.
I do not practice medicine in the USA, so I can't really know whether there's shortage of any specific drug there, but the medicine I suggested is not an imaginary one and is the kind of medicine that would have helped with your son's symptoms as opposed to pepto-bismol!

I'm sorry you had these feelings, but it's really not my fault!

Kind Regards!
