Suggest Treatment For Vomiting And Diarrhoea In A Child

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Nov 2015
Question: My 2.5 yo son was vomiting and had diarea since 4 am (now 6pm same day). We took him to the hospital (in Shanghai China) and a blood test revealed the cause was bacterial.
He couldn't keep anything down so the doctor gave him antibiotics via saline drip (Cefaclor) at midday.
He came home and vomited up some rice soup he had at 1 pm. He slept to 4 pm and then vomited up some water we gave after waking.
I suppose it will take some time for the ab's to kick in...but my wife is worried that he has been misdiagnosed.
It is now 6pm and she wants to take him back to the hospital. We have mixed a XXXXXXX of rehydration salts and are now giving them to him.
I am inclined to keep trying with water and wait for the ab's to work on his stomach.
How long will I wait for a reply?
Also the blood test showed a high White Blood cell count...the Dr said this indicated bacterial infection.

Brief Answer:
ORS is the mainstay of treatment. Symptoms will take some time to resolve.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have carefully gone through your query and understand your concerns. Your child seems to be suffering from acute gastroenteritis. Irrespective of the use of antibiotics it would take a few days for the diarrhea and vomiting to resolve. The mainstay of treatment now is to replenish the salt and water lost. Thus ORS or oral rehydration solution is the mainstay of treatment. The course of antibiotics however needs to be completed to avoid development of antibiotic resistance.

You will have to be patient and have to give ORS sip by sip. Check for the urine output and if it decreases, the fluid intake needs to be enhanced further. If the child grows lethargic, you will have to take him to the hospital without delay. But otherwise ORS is all that is needed.

Let me know if you have any specific queries.

Regards
