Posted on Thu, 2 Feb 2017
Question: My baby girl is 15 months old, she is active, she walks, she plays, she sleeps properly & even started talking also, problem is that she does not eat at all, not even a biscuit a day. She was colic. Till 6 months she was totally on breast milk & then we started given her semi-solid & puried food plus powder milk at that time she ate but vomit some part not all. Gradually vomiting problem was gone but her food intake started decreasing. Now she refuses every thing & milk too. We tried giving her all possible food in all possible ways but nothing worked. Now she just want mother milk & nothing else. Please suggest how to make her eat. Giving medicine is also a difficulty as she spill out sugar based syrups also. She is not gaining weight for last two months but increased in height.

Detailed Answer:

Hai,

Thanks for consulting us.

As from your quote your daughter is active and developmentally normal.

Eating problem of child regards with mother is always a big concern.

Unless baby is not active and not playing around, not attained age related milestone then we should not consider it as an abnormal issue when related to eating .

You didn’t mention the weight of your baby and birth weight.

A normal girl baby around 15 month will be anywhere between 8 kg -12kg approximately according to recommended growth chart.

After one year child will gain height more than the weight. It is physiological one.

Breast feeding is a very good practise, till 2 years you can continue. As breast milk contain good amount of nutrients that will help your child physical and mental growth.

300 ml of Commercial milk is allowed per day. More than that will harm your baby like constipation, habitual hesitation of taking other complimentary foods.

As from your history your child is absolutely normal.

Try not to get anxious about her eating habit.. If you're able to keep calm and positive attitude, it will be better for both you and your toddler.
as your child stomach is still tiny, so she won't be able to eat that much in one go. If she doesn’t want any more, don't try to force him. In that way he won’t vomit.

Try not to fret too much about what your child eats at a single meal, or in a single day. Instead, think about what he eats over the course of a week.

Most of the children in toddler phase they go through a phase of only eating a few particular foods. This is a normal part of their development. It’s partly because of something called food neophobia, which is a fear of new foods. Many toddlers experience this around the age of two.

Your child is most likely to eat what he knows. He needs time to learn that unfamiliar foods are safe and enjoyable to eat. He'll gain confidence by watching you and others enjoying the foods. Once he started enjoying that then she will claim for that food.

Eat with your child as often as possible. This may be hard if you and your partner both work full-time, but try to make time when you can.

At shared mealtimes, eat the same foods as your child.. children learn to eat new foods by watching and copying their parents and other children

Arrange for your toddler to eat with other children as often as possible. Invite one of your toddler's nursery or preschool friends over for tea.

Try to avoid giving your toddler a lot of milk in the hour before a meal as it will fill him up. If he's thirsty, give him a drink of water instead.

Don't be too hard on yourself or your toddler. Just put it behind you and approach the next meal positively. You’re both on a learning curve

As eating problem is seems to a habitual one. You need to train her to eat smashed potoato, steamed vegetables, dal, gruel millet(ragi, bajra, nuts powder etc.

You can change only by training her with patience. Nothing else will help.

In ayurvedic prospective for coilc pain you can give bonnisan syrup from Himalaya ayurvedic company if needed.

Hope I given you an idea. Kindly get back to me for more clarification.

Thanks and regards
