Suggest Treatment For Vitamin D Deficiency

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Aug 2016
Question: My mother is 84 years old. Her vitamin D test scored 20.4 ng/ml. I checked on the Vitamin D Council website and it looks like this is deficient. Can you please advise what is the best way to increase her vitamin D without adding a supplement for her to take orally. My mother does not like taking medicine so if there is an alternative that will address this issue please advise. Also, can you tell me how quickly we can improve her vitamin D (without taking a supplement)?

Brief Answer:
Sun exposure and food enriched with vit d

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I do appreciate your concern regarding to your mother health.
If she is against the Vit D tablets supplements, she can increase it by getting exposed to the sun.
If she goes to the beach for 2 weeks it will be enough to raise the Vit D level.
There are also some food that contain Vit D such as;
-Flesh of fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel) and fish liver oils are among the best sources
- Foods fortified with vitamin D, like some dairy products, orange juice, soy milk, and cereals.
-Beef liver.
-Cheese.
-Egg yolks.
After 3 months of enriched diet with the above products she can check the Vit D level again.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
