Question: My grand daughter has been throwing up and having diahhrea for two days , was admitted last night to hospital and they gave her liquids to hydrate her, then sent her home, today she became very lathargic, complained of stomach pain and fever of 104.5 so went to walk in clinic now on to Children's hospital said her white blood cell count was high, any idea what this could be ? Appendix maybe?

Brief Answer:
could be appendicitis or gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
From your description it looks like your granddaughter has probably a viral gastroenteritis or appendicitis.
High white blood cells along with fever vomiting and loose stools can occur in both.
It is better to admit her again and get ultrasound abdomen done to rule out appendicitis.
She may need Iv fluids and anti-emetic medicines.
But don't worry it will settle soon if it is just gastroenteritis.
Ensure you continue giving her oral rehydration solutions like pedialyte.
Wishing your granddaughter good health and speedy recovery.
Regards
Dr Arun
