Question: Dear sirs,

My 15 month old daughter has a viral infection after arriving to Dubai from UK, vomiting day 1, fever+diorhea day 2. Pedeatrician has prescribed fever reduction meds + enterogermina as she had 4 lose and watery motions today with fever over 38.5c. She is both soft food and formula fed (aptamil)

Can you please advise if she can continue with Aptamil or not, she had very little to eat, few biscuits and some rice. Temperature is now normal, shall we feed her in her sleep?

Any meds against diarhea we should consider?

Thank you, your promp response is much appreciated

Brief Answer:
Feed her as normally .

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Viral gastroenteritis (a viral infection of gastrointestinal tract) is a self limited condition. There is no specific treatment.
The use of drugs to stop diarrhea are not recommended in children because the risk of serious side effects is high.

The only thing to be done in viral gastroenteritis is to avoid dehydration.
Since your baby has frequent diarrhea and high fever ,the risk of dehydration is high.
You should give her plenty of fluids. You can use Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) that you can find in pharmacy.

You should continue feeding her as normally .If she doesn't accept the food ,at least make sure she take enough fluids.
She should return to her normal diet as soon as possible. So feed her as you always did.You can continue with Aptamil.

You should be careful and observe your daughter for signs and symptoms of dehydration including:
-dry mouth ,dry tongue and lips
-fewer tears when crying, sunken eyes, weakness, being irritable or lethargic.

If you notice symptoms like drowsiness, pale skin, cold hands or feet, very few wet nappies, fast breathing , then you should seek medical help right away because she may need to take intravenous fluids.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify .I will be happy to assist you further.

Wishing a quick and complete recovery to your little girl.

Kind Regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
