Suggest Treatment For Vaginal Bleeding While On Birth Control Pill

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Jan 2016
Question: Hello, im really concerned with my girlfriend. She had a vaginal bleeding on December 27th at 10pm. She takes the birth control pill correctly and there was still a week to finish her BC pill cycle (28 day), sort of a breakthrough bleeding. But on the next day, December 28th, she said it was still bleeding, like a period, with cramps, and a couple hours later she mentioned she was probably sick, had body pain, runny nose, sore throath, and later she mentioned fever. She could barely talk to me on the phone because she was really sick. I don't know if the bleeding and those symptoms were correlated. We have been to a hospital and they said it was a viral infection. Turns out today she feels a little better (December 2nd), but its still bleeding! like a period, and a pain like colic. So its been 6 days she is bleeding and her cycle ends monday (December 4th). Are both (the infection and the bleeding) correlated? I am scared because i read about implantation bleeding (but she takes BC pill and sometimes we use condoms and i never finish inside), but i also read about uterus infection, inflammation, and many other things... can you enlighten me please?

a few things to note:
- its a medium-heavy bleeding, same coloration as a period
- she complains about internal pain during sex, depending on the position
- we sometimes use condoms, lube

Brief Answer:
A breakthrough bleeding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The bleeding that started prior to the expected date of periods and while taking birth control regularly is not due to pregnancy. This is likely to be a breakthrough bleeding. The viral fever has added to the stress and could have caused a more than usual bleeding.
Having pain during sex can be due to a pelvic inflammation. This can be ruled out after getting her examined by a gynecologist.

Thanks for clarifying ! though im still confused about a few things,

1) Is the breakthrough bleeding correlated to the infection? Because they happened almost on the same day
2) My girlfriend bled during cycle a couple times before, but not as harsh as this time, do you think theres something to do with the pill dosage?
3) does the pill still effective?
4) She says the bleeding looks like period bleeding. On tuesday she stops taking the pill for 7 days, does she need to expect a normal period for that week? or because of what happened she might not?
5) she has a history of polycistic ovaries, which needed her to do a surgery to remove her right ovary, do you think theres a possibility of this being a Cyst? with that much bleeding for many days? Or due to an inflammation?
6) We are going to the gynecologist, but meanwhile, what are your suggestions?
7) you said it might be a breakthrough bleeding, but said theres a possibility of a pelvic inflammation, and also said the infection has worsen the bleeding. So whats your final word?
8) last but not least, should i worry?

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
1. Breakthrough bleeding is not related to infection. The stress caused by infection can cause the bleeding.
2. No. The pill dosage is same in every pack. There is no need to change the dosage. It is a common side effect.
3. Yes. The pill will still protect against pregnancy.
4. After she stops the pill she can have a mild bleeding during the pill free week.
5. A cyst can cause a delay in bleeding or an irregular bleeding pattern due to hormonal disturbance associated with it.
6. Do consult gynecologist and get an ultrasound scan done to monitor the changes in the cyst.
7. Pelvic inflammation needs to be ruled out after a pelvic examination by a gynecologist since she has pain during sex.
8. No need to worry. All these are normal variations and can be treated with proper medicines.
Hope my answer is helpful.
