Suggest Treatment For Vaginal Bleeding, Sore Throat, Fever And Running Nose

Question: Hello. This is a second question about my girlfriend. Its quite strange what she is having right now.
On December 27th, she started having a vaginal bleeding- very very similiar to a period, acording to her - and on December 28th she was still bleeding, as strong as the 1st day of a period. Few hours later she mentioned fever, and symptons like a flu (runny nose, sore throat...). The bleeding was unusual given that there was still a week to finish her taking her BC pills (21 day, 7 day pause).

It kept like that for a week. fever was not present and flu symptoms were minimal at that point, but the bleeding was there, so we have been to the doctor this past monday (OBGYN). The doctor examined her, and told there wasn't any visual fractures, inflammations, pregnancy, cysts... the doctor told her to do a few exams, which she will, on the next friday and on the next tuesday, and she will return to the doctor only on february 2nd. The doctor also told her that it could be hormonal imbalance and changing the pill might work, but nothing could be confirmed for now.

Given that there's still a couple weeks till she return to the doctor, i would like to know what could possibly be happening. She never skips pills, she hasn't taken any medicine that could mess with her body, she hasn't been suffering from stress or anything like that.

My girlfriend is still bleeding (10/11 days now) - a little less - and she mentioned she's got a headache, runny nose, and feeling sick/not normal. This week she entered on the 7-day pill break.

I, then, have a few questions:
1 - Is it hormonal? Infection? what are your thoughts? because it suddenly happened.
2 - Is she supposed to bleed more, on the following days? given that this is her pill break week
3 - maybe she will have to change the contraception?
4 - I know that the doctor told she is not pregnant, but as a man, im always scared a bit, though i dont ejaculate inside and my girlfriend never missed a pill... its not a pregnancy pattern right? just so i can relax a little bit more...

Im concerned with her, this has never happened...

Brief Answer:
A hormonal imbalance likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
This bleeding can be due to hormonal causes. Infection is not likely.
Since this is the pill break week, there can be more bleeding or an irregular spotting.
She needs a stronger hormonal dose to take care of this imbalance. Do consult her gynecologist for proper prescriptions.
It is not due to pregnancy. There is no need to worry.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

I understand, thanks for your answering.
Hormonal imbalances could also decrease her immunity and thus leading to flu/cold/headaches ? Because she is feeling kinda sick. Or maybe because of the high loss of blood?

I read about abnormal uterine bleeding, is this the case? i also read about breakthrough bleeding, and so on...

Does this have some sort of name?

Brief Answer:
It is dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Sorry for the delay in response.
Hormonal imbalances of this type usually do not affect the immunity. The cough and cold that she is having is likely to be a co incidence. It is a dysfunctional uterine bleeding. It can also happen due to PCOD.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Hello we've been to the doctor, she had an ultrasound and nothing was detected, everything was normal. Does this reinforce the fact that it is hormonal?

Like i told you, this is her 7 day break week, and her bleeding just got heavier, and she is experiencing cramps, as expected, is it due to her period like you told?

She got a blood test and will do a pap test next week, though the results aren't available yet. I will keep you posted.

Brief Answer:
Hormonal cause likely.

Detailed Answer:
It is good that ultrasound scan is normal. This further suggests that a hormonal imbalance is the cause. If all the reports are normal then just increasing the dose of hormones will take care of the bleeding.
Regards.
