Question: why is it that sometimes I have urine retention and I can't go on my own, then when I go to the er and they insert a catheter and take it out, I then can go on my own......... that lasts for a couple weeks, then it returns back to the same thing. it's mainly when I hold my urine for three or more hours.went to the urologist he order a Ct scan of pelvis and abdomen...... he really didn't get in to a lot of detail....... my urine had about 530cc when they last empty it.....any ideas....I'm 32 , I'm a female, never had kids.Had a open book pelvis fracture in 2006....

Hi my dear,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and am sorry for the situation you are in.

1. You are saying to have urine retention sometimes, and you can't go on your own.

Urinary tract infection and blockage of urinary pathways are the most common causes taking into account your previous history of having an open pelvis fracture.

2. You are saying that your urologist has done ct-scan and other tests. Can you please provide the reports? I need to evaluate those reports to understand if there is a blockage in any part of your urinary pathways.

3. As urine retention is not happening all the time, what passes in my mind are :
- some types of medications you might be using?
- any other health problem you might be having?

Looking forward to have the requested data in!

I got to go back Tuesday for the results....I'm on Bisoprolol/htc5_6.65 mg..... As far add I know that'd my only medical condition. it started of that I would have problems starting my urine flow. When it didn't come it was slow, then I would walk around for a couple mins and it return normal. one time I couldn't go and then I waited for a long time then it started to come over time normal. now it is to the point where I have to get catherize and then the flow returns to normal. I tested negative for a UTI every time I went to the er..........I also notice a little swelling in the vagina opening...

Brief Answer:
explained below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,

From the new data you are providing, it seems that there might be a blockage in your urinary pathways or you might be having a local neurological problem that won't let your bladder empty normally.

So, yours is a case for further investigation.
When you get the lab results can pass to me.

For the moment, if I was your caring doctor would advise to :
- increase fluids intake to bring you more often to the toilet
- toilet training can help: go to toilet whenever you need to, do not delay. Or can go to toilet every 3or 4 hours and stimulate passing urine
- caffeinated drinks or sugary and juicy fruits (like grapes) can help stimulate passing urine.

With regards to swelling in the opening of your vagina, it is related to :
- catheterisation
- or local irritation due to new detergent or possible vaginal infection especially if you are also having vaginal discharge.
Further examinations of vaginal swab or discharge is advised to determine the final diagnosis.

Keep good genital hygiene and apply cold compresses for a few days.

Hope it was of help!

do you think that this problem can be cancerous
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini (41 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
At this time,I do not think of cancer but to other possibilities...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

My first thought goes for possible blockage in your urinary flow. At this point, without an exact examination, I cannot say anything for sure. If I was your caring doctor would run further investigations to determine the nature of blockage.

Cancer is not a possibility with your current symptoms. They are more suggestive of a neurological problem or post-traumatic blockage (as you have a previous history of pelvic trauma).

All the best!

I went to the doctor and he said I had an enlarged uterus...... could this be the reason for my symptoms
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini (34 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Can you please provide the reports of tests you did for further evaluations

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,

Happy to have your news.

1. Happy to hear that you only have an enlarged uterus and nothing else. However, I would also ask about the cause to this enlarged uterus: physiological? or there is something else?

2. When uterus is enlarged, it will put pressure on the bladder and nearby urinary pathways, explaining your actual symptoms. As mentioned earlier, and confirmed now that there is something blocking your urinary pathways (i.e. your enlarged uterus).

If I was your caring doctor would go further to determine the cause of this enlargement. You can send a report of the tests you did so I can analyze them myself.
