Question: Hi, I have been sick since last Friday night. Started out with a bad sore throat and runny nose. This lasted all day Sat. then Sat night chills really bad. Also feeling weak and achy. Went to the Dr.s Tuesday. he said I had a Sinus infection and put me on Amoxicillin 875 mg. I've taken that with no great results. Went back to the Dr today and she put me on something Listoria I think and she took a throat culture and blood work.

Brief Answer:
Upper respiratory tract infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I went through your query and understood your concerns.

Your symptoms are suggestive of upper respiratory tract infection. Most of the infections are due to viral infection, rarely require antibiotic treatment. Antibiotic treatment usually given to prevent further bacterial infection.

If a patient comes to me with these symptoms i usually start them on the following measures.
1. salt warm water gargling 4 times a day
2.steam inhalation 3-4 times a day.
3. antihistamine medication to reduce congestion and symptoms.
4. Avoid cold food items for few days.
5. Antibiotic treatment.

If your doctor has missed out any on that list, you can discuss about it. Most of the viral infection resolve with these measures in 3 to 4 days.

It is a good move to take samples from throat for culture. That will indicate to us if he need better antibiotic. Wait for couple of days until you get this report.

Hope i answered your query. Feel free to ask further related query.

Wish you a speedy recovery.

Regards
