Question: Hi, I have been diagnosed today with tuberculois lymphadentis, surgeon has asked me to to a CT scan so that they can figure out how big the lump is from within and then accordingly drain out the pus from the lump. I would like to know, if this disease can solely be treated with medicine only? Can i continue to go to work, is it communicable, what are the basic precautions I should take and what kind of diet should I follow?

Can be managed Medically

Hi

Dear Ms
I would like to reassure you, Tuberculosis has 100% cure. Isolated Tubercular Lymphadenitis is non infective to others.
Tubercular Lymphadenitis , mainstay of treatment is Medical management by anti-tubercular drugs.
Surgery is only indicated for
1. Confirmation of Diagnosis: If the Fine needle aspiration cytology(FNAC) report is inconclusive then, open biopsy is indicated to establish the diagnosis
2. Treatment of complication: If there is abscess formation or sinus.
In my clinical practice, I confirm the diagnosis either by FNAC/biopsy. I do Ultrasound to know if there is abscess. I start the individual on anti-tubercular treatment. If there is pus , I usually drain it with needle aspiration.
I hope , I have answered your queries.
Do write to me if you need further assistance.
Take Care
