The treatment of tinnitus depends upon the cause
There are many many causes for tinnitus.. common being age related hearing loss, ear infection, ear wax, Meniere's disease, exposure to loud sounds, otosclerosis, damage to the inner ear caused by medicines , acoustic neuromas.
Your tinnitus has been longstanding. Since you are 79 years old it is possible that it is age related. But other causes should be ruled out. You will require a complete examination by an ENT specialist to know the exact cause. Some investigations may also be required. Treatment of tinnitus can be started once the cause is known.
Persistent tinnitus which is age related is difficult to treat. You can play the radio in low volume to mask the tinnitus. Do not pay attention to the tinnitus, more attention you pay to it , it will bother you even more. If there is hearing loss associated with tinnitus, then wearing a hearing aid will reduce to tinnitus. Tinnitus maskers are available , you can talk to your doctor regarding maskers. A variety of medicines are available but none are very effective.
