Posted on Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Question: I bruised my shin about a month and a half ago. There is still some discoloration and the area is still tender to the touch.
I also now have a bruise on the back of my calf and it has a large tender lump in the middle of a large black, purple and yellow bruise.
Why am I bruising so easily and they are lasting so long with tenderness?

Brief Answer:
Most likely benign but other causes mentioned

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
Bruising easily does not mean you have a serious health problem, especially if bruising is minimal or only shows up once in a while.
Women bruise more easily than men, especially from minor injuries on the thighs, buttocks, and upper arms
A tendency to bruise easily sometimes runs in families.
Sometimes bruising can be due to a purpura which is bleeding into the skin caused by a number of conditions like
Use of aspirin or anticoagulants.
A bleeding or clotting disorder, such as hemophilia, von Willebrand's disease, thrombocytopenia, or other rare clotting disorder.
Inflammation of a blood vessel (vasculitis).
Malnutrition, such as deficiencies of vitamins B12, C, or K, or folic acid.
Some times diseases like chronic inflammatory diseases, such as lupus, liver disease, such as cirrhosis, some types of cancer, such as Hodgkin's disease, leukemia, or multiple myeloma are also reasons for easy bruising.

I bruise very easily and quite often. Mostly on my legs and I usually cannot account for the bruises origins.
I also have constant fatigue and headaches.
In your opinion do you feel it is something I should see a doctor about?

Brief Answer:
Better to find out whether treatment is needed.

Detailed Answer:
It is likely to be benign. However it would be good to see a doctor, have the tests done to exclude any condition that requires treatment.
If you do, I would appreciate you letting me know the results of the tests.

Best wishes,
Dr Noble Zachariah
