Posted on Tue, 27 Jan 2015
Question: Hi my daughter who is 3 has white (bright) pupil in photos or an orange or yellow. Sometime both eyes but always the left eye. I found this out xmas day an. Looked back through some photos and actually realised she had this as a baby but also some pictures of when she was a baby had normal red eyes in a flash. So Boxing Day I took her to our local eye a&e and they dilated her pupils and looked at her eyes and said red reflex was good I went away feeling a little easier but yesterday I went back as I was not convinced so got a different Dr to look at her an he dilated her pupils again. An also said her eyes are fine. My question is can two drs get or miss something? Do I still need to be concerned because every time I take a picture it just panics me all over again thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
No need to be concerned.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.
Iam Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history and the photos attached with the question.
The red reflex in left eye is appearing white and yellow in some photos. This requires dilatation and fundus photo to rule out abnormal conditions of the eye affecting lens or retina.
Since two eye doctors have done this and they have told as normal, no need to worry.
This is probably because of effect of flash of camera creating optical illusion.
Hence no need to worry.
If possible send me fundus photo if it was taken by your eye doctor so that I can confirm that the retina is normal and there is no problem.
Hope this is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Red reflex cannot be missed by ophthalmologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

From the explanation you have provided here it is clear that your doctors have done indirect ophthalmoscopy. This test will identify any problems of the retina which will cause altered red reflex. This will not be missed. Hence no need to worry, your daughter is fine.

Hope this is helpful to you.
