Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Infection Around Knee Wound

Question: My son got a scrape at summer camp last week (Thursday) Over the weekend and since then we have either been at the beach or he has been in the water. He started water camp in the bay on Monday. His original scrape on his knee as you will see in the photos was small (in the photos the original scrape is the white area in the middle of the entire wound. During the last week the original wound grew and has never really healed. I noticed on Tuesday what looked like a wart on the side of the same knee. Today Friday that wart or whatever it was looks like a wound. I also noticed yesterday what looked like sand flea bites. Today they look different. I am mostly just worried about staph infection. He did have a high fever last Monday night around 102.9 degrees but this was prior to his initial scrape. No fever since and he seem perfectly healthy otherwise.

The first two photos were taken on Tuesday. The rest of the photos are from today Friday.

Brief Answer:
no visible sign of infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

although a close look is always better, the photos seem OK, regarding your concerns about infection. Signs of infection may include excessive redness and warmth (may feel like if only this part of his body had fever), worsening pain, swelling, purulent discharge and perhaps fever. None of the aforementioned features are visible on the photos you've uploaded. It seems more like a superficial skin damage. When the damage to the skin is superficial only, the rest of the skin (the deep layers) can rebuild the lost layer. It just takes some time.

Since a photo is never as good as a real close look at it, you'd better visit a general surgeon just to be sure. Meanwhile, try to keep the wound clean and dry.
