Suggest Treatment For Swollen Painful Leg After Injury

Question: My son is 24 years old, very athletic and active. During a basketball game about 6 days ago, he blocked some kids shot, but somehow got kneed next to the shin bone. His entire lower leg swelled up and hurt. Six days later, his leg is still swollen (but noticeably not as much) and it hurts, especially when he is out all day long with his friends.

Question: How possible is it that he could have a blood clot that could be dangerous. Just for the record, once I twisted my ankle playing basketball and my entire lower leg swelled up HUGE, like I had a giant guys leg for one of my legs. That was about 8 years ago... I am still alive and didn't even go to the doctor)

Should he see a doctor immediately, should he take aspirin daily, heat, ice, etc.

I appreciate your help,

Dad

Brief Answer:
Heat, ice, raising the leg and pain meds are enough

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

As a concerned dad, I understand your worries. they are real and genuine. There is no possible clot here that can cause stroke or any other damage related to blood clots. The risk factors and description are not suggestive.

Your son suffered a blunt injury to the leg. Swelling, pain, redness, etc. are normal signs of a reactional inflammatory reactions following this injury. It takes a second to sustain an injury but a lot longer to heal. The healing is progressive and I will recommend that you exercise some patience. As long as the swelling is not worsening, the pain is lessening and symptoms getting better, there is nothing to get worried about.

Heat, rest, ice blocks, raising the leg and pain medications like Ibuprofen and Tylenol are enough to address this condition. There is no need to seek medical attention at this time unless new symptoms set in.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. I wish your son the best with his athletics and a speedy recovery to get back on the courts even stronger than before. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
