Question: I had a badly abscessed tooth about 4 mos ago. while it was abscessed I got a swelling in the roof of my mouth on the same side of tooth. My gums are also swollen on that side. Tooth is gone but swelling remains. What should I do about this problem?

Brief Answer:
X ray followed by appropriate treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain swelling is due to tooth abscess only..

As you have mentioned that tooth is gone, I would like to first of all know that has your tooth broken and the root portion is still embedded in the gums or is the tooth completely removed along with the roots?

Do you have swelling over the gums where the tooth is present or your gums are entirely swollen?

Do you have swelling over the cheek too?

Do you also have pain?

Please write back so that I can guide you towards treatment accordingly..

Regards..

The whole tooth along with the root was extracted. The gums where the tooth was extracted is healed over nicely. No swelling on cheek. There is no pain. There is a ridge in roof of mouth next to top jaw teeth. The gum seems swollen on the bottom behind last tooth. The effected tooth was my second jaw tooth from the back on the bottom.

I was put out by the specialist to extract tooth. I had a terrible abscess even affecting the jaw bone. I took antibiotics before the extraction to take care of the awful pain of the abscess and to take down pain. I also took antibiotics after the extraction. This problem isn't getting any worse.

Brief Answer:
Looks like swollen gum flap or Pericoronitis..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome back..

It looks like the swelling behind the gum of last tooth is due to Pericoronitis in which the gum flap around wisdom tooth gets infected and swollen due to food accumulation in that area..

You need to get a clinical evaluation done followed by irritation of the area with antiseptic solution and taking a course of antibiotics like Augmentin..
Also doing warm saline gargle and antiseptic mouthwash gargle can help..

For the ridge on palate a clinical evaluation can only help in proper diagnosis and treatment planing..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
