Question: I have a cap on the upper right tooth. It started to bother me. I went to the dentist. Antibiotic was prescribed. The tooth really started to throb, I have a script for 2 antibiotics. My check is swollen enough that if I smiled one side remains turned down. This is the side I chew on. I had hoped the antibiotics would have started to work. It is day 4 of the double prescription. It throbs but my swollen check with the tooth has left me very uncomfortable. The check at times can feel numb. I have never had anything like this before, help.

Brief Answer:
DENTAL ABSCESS, Only medicine won't help, treatment of the tooth is must.

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain and presentation of the symptoms it seems the tooth on which you have a cap has got infected leading to tooth decay..

This can occur when there is some gap between the tooth and the cap by either due to defective fitting of the cap or dissolution of the cementing material..

This leads to seepage of food debris and bacteria in between the tooth and the cap causing secondary infection.

Once the infection reaches the central portion of tooth known as PULP which contains nerves and blood vessels, the irritation of nerves leads to severe pain.

In your case the infection has progressed from the pulp to the area below the root tips of the tooth via root canals leading to formation of pus in the area below the root tips and thus a DENTAL ABSCESS is formed..

The pus and infection has perforated the bone and has accumulated into the soft tissues leading to swelling and the numb feeling is due to pressure over the nerve endings caused by pus..

As you are taking the antibiotics which are although correct medicines for this kind of infection but antibiotics alone cannot solve the problem as the infection has increased extensively and the pus has no escape way, so clearing up of so much of infection will take a long time and at times infection can keep on progressing causing Space Infections which can be further painful and fatal..

You should immediately consult an ENDODONTIST and get evaluated and as you have already mentioned that you are advised for a ROOT CANAL TREATMENT, so after you are done with taking the antibiotics for 5 days you should get the root canal treatment initiated.

A cavity will be drilled in the tooth and it will provide an escape way for pus and as the pus will be drained out the infection will resolve faster and swelling will be reduced quickly..

You can get an IOPAR [ X RAY] of the offending tooth done and can send it to me so that I can evaluate the exact status of the tooth and guide you better with the treatment..

Hope this information helps..

Further queries are welcome..

Thanks and regards..
