Suggest Treatment For Swelling Of Ankles Due To Xarelto Consumption

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Sep 2014
Question: I'm an RN. I was diagnosed and treated for dvt on my left calf and bilateral pe on July 18 this year. I was started on xarelto because my pt/inr was instable on coumadin. Since starting the xarelto I have had a lot of selling in my ankles feet and lower shins-about 1+putting edema. It is the worst in my feet. I have a history of precious dvt in my left calf from 2007.
Elevation doesn't seem to help. When I wear sneakers the swelling in my feet decreases but you can see where the shoe ends when I take them off. other than elevation is there anything I can do to relieve the swelling?

Brief Answer:
Wear Compression stockings Class II.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX. Thank you for the detailed history. The swelling can be decreased by wearing Class II Compression stockings which we universally advice to all patients with DVT to decrease the venous pressure in the ankle and calf. You should wear them the entire day for the first four weeks and then can start taking them off at night along with limb elevation. This will help reduce the edema. Do let me know if you have any queries. Take care.
