Question: Hi,
My name is XXXX I work in BMC Software Ltd. XXXXXXX My Father is Diabetic & takes insulin on regular basis. He injects the insulin near his belly area. Few days back while injecting, the syringe it got bent slightly & the insulin did not go properly. Now he got some swelling & pus. Kindly advice!

Hi Mr. XXXX,

Thanks for your question.
I can understand your concern.

There may be development of abscess at injection site in your father's case.
He requires clinical examination of swelling.
Depending on examination there may be need of antibiotics and may require drainage of abscess if size is big or abscess not responding to antibiotics.
So it is advisable to consult his treating doctor.

Along with this -
1) There should be well controlled blood sugar levels for better healing.
2) He should avoid taking insulin on the same side of abscess.
He should take insulin with rotating the site of injection on side opposite to that of abscess on belly at least 4 fingers away from umbilicus.
He can also take insulin on front and lateral side of thighs.
3) Insulin injection technique need to be observed and if required need to be discussed with your treating doctor.
