Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: A few weeks ago my giant Lab knocked my 2 year old into our tv and she hit her head at full force right on the corner of the base. I can still see the bump and its a little discolored and when I touch it she winces and says ouch. Is this normal for it to still be painful after weeks have gone by and for there to still be a visable bump there. Please help. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
To rule out infected haematoma

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms XXXXXXX

Persistent swelling is quite common after blunt head injury. When there is trauma there is underlying scalp haematoma (clotted blood ). It slowly liquifies and gets absorbed. The duration of persistence will depend on size of haematoma. There could be persistent pain and discolouration (due to haemolysis or breakdown of clotted blood and release of pigments ).
If the pain is severe then possibility of infected haematoma needs to be considered. Diagnosis can be made by clinical examination and followed by needle aspiration by your Primary care physician.
