Question: I have been to both skin Dr. And my family Dr,for what was diagnosed as nerve damage from a sever sun burn on my neck and arms! He (skin Dr) gave me DOXEPIN HCL CAP 10 mg ,twice a day# lidocine2.5&prilocaine 2.5 to apply as needed. I have tried this for months with no relief. My skin is super sensitive to any thing that touches it ! I have tried increasing my fluids and putting Aveeno skin relief, nothing helps! I have been suffering for two years, both winters and summer! Can you please help me! Desperate!

Brief Answer:
Need to take Gabapentin.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. For neuropathic pain, gabapentin or pregabalin will be effective. As Doxepin is not helping, you need to change the medications.
2. All applications of topical capsacin, will be followed by long periods of reduced skin sensibility or desensitization. This can be tried later, along with above.
3. Initially gabapentin can be started.

Do take prescription from your doctor. For discontinuing doxepin, discuss with your doctor too.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.

Do I need a precripition ofrom my family Dr or can I buy this Gabapentinor pregabalin over the counter? Do you recommend both or just one . What does this medicine do and how does it work. Should I continue with topical capsaicin also?

Brief Answer:
Will require prescription

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking again.

You can take either one. Both are effective. One can be started and watched for a month, if effective, continue. If not, go for another medication.

You will require prescription from your doctor. These are not over the counter medication.

Capsaicin is needed, if pain still persists, but on reduced scale. It is over the counter. Many find it beneficial. If too painful, can be used at times. With gabapentin or pregabalin, usually not necessary

Hope it helps.
