Suggest Treatment For Stomach Discomfort, Gastritis And Bloating

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Jan 2015
Question: I talked to a doctor on this site about 2 months ago(Mid October) about stomach discomfort. I was told it could be gastritis and to take Prilosec. I did and that helped. After the two weeks was up I stopped. The discomfort came back. I went to the clinic and talked to the PA. She said I could take the Prilosec again to see if that would help. This was Mid November. The discomfort stopped but then other symptoms started happening. I was having shortness of breath and trouble sleeping. I was feeling bloated as but not passing gas or burping alot. I also told this to the PA. She said it could be diet related so try the Prilosec and stay away from spicy and sodas to see if this helps. I contacted the PA 1 week later and told her I was having shortness of breath. She asked if I wanted a prescription for albuterol(sp)? I said yes. I tried it. It seemed to help. However the following night I woke up and my heart was beating very fast. I was having trouble breathing. I was nervous. I tried to calm myself down. I took another dose of the inhaler. I drove myself to the emergency room. They did a chest xray, ekg. The dcotor said my chest xray looked fine. I didn't show that I had a heart attack or anything with the ekg. She said she wasn't sure why it felt tight(my chest) at times. I went home. The heavy breathing is not all of the times but I'm wondering if the combination of stomach issues, chest and breathing are related. I know in the past I have gotten sick because of stress. I just want to make sure it isn't anything more. I contacted the PA today but it was late. I will call her back tomorrow to see what she says.

Also my lower back was warm a couple days ago when I went to sleep.

1. Burning. Sometimes but mostly tightness. Sometimes it feels like I pulled a muscle.

2. Burning or sharp pain comes and goes. This evening I felt burning after I ate some cake.

3.No.
4.No. I only took 3 doses of the Albuterol last week.
5.No
6. Sometimes my left arm feels sore. My right chest is bigger than my left side.
7. Stress. I have recently moved to Alaska for a few months and the change in weather has affected my mood. This move have definitely brought on stress.
8.No abdomen tests. The PA I met with wanted to make sure it wasn't just a diet issue. She said if symptoms didn't change then we would possibly do some tests.

Brief Answer:
Most probably stress/anxiety induced

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for getting back with the answers. I have gone through them.

In my opinion there could be two probable causes; First, Gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) and Second, stress/anxiety induced. As you have already taken OTC medicines and symptoms re-occurred so i would suggest you to visit a gastroenterologist evaluation of GERD which can be done by esophageal manometry & further workup.

Stress causes constriction of bronchus (conducting pathway of air) resulting in shortness of breath. Similarly stress ALSO causes increased release of stomach acid which in-return causes pain & other symptoms. If you are unable to control on it then some anxiolytics prescription by your local doctor will help you a lot. Meanwhile following general care will help to reduce the symptoms:

> General Care:
- Take frequent smaller meals.
- Don't take heavy meal at night
- Perform walk/exercise in the evening for at least 30-45 mins
- Eat fresh fruits & green leafy vegetables
- Yogurt & some pro-biotics

> AVOID:
- Coffee or tea (both regular and decaffeinated)
- Carbonated beverages
- Alcohol
- Chocolates
- Smoking (if you do)

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
