Question: I am a male, 66 years old. I am a chemo therapy patient. On Febuary 2011 I had surgery to remove a cancerous appendix and a cancurous tumer in my lower XXXXXXX They tok out part of my XXXXXXX and 14 limp nodes, 2 had cancer in them. I immediately started chemo treatments for 6 months, after chemo was completed, I was cancer free for 1 year. I had a ct scan in September 2012, They found 4 tumbers growing in my liver. They were all very small, my doctor immediately started me back on chemo. She gave me about the same drugs as before, and one new drug Avastin that cuts off the blood supply to the tumors. I have been on treatment now for a year and a half and they have done a very good job of getting rid of the tumors. My doctor says there is only scar tissue left, but I must continue treatment because these things are like weeds and will come back if left untreated. The doctor says I must stay on this same plan from now on. I go in for chemo every 2 weeks. I spend about 4 hours in the clinic on Wednesdays and then they send me home with a slow drip pump and bag of chemo that lasts 46 hours, I return the pump on Friday morning and I am done for 2 more weeks. I am really getting tired of this plan. I am getting very tired of doing this every 2 weeks, I really do hate the bag for 46 hours. I am getting tired of feeling sick inside all the time and the avastin makes my nose bleed all the time. Is there an alternative plan I can take to where I don't have to do this every 2 weeks? Can I have chemo, radiation, or something else that works just as well and I don't have to go in as often, and don't have to take the bag home. I have stage 4 XXXXXXX cancer menastatis, and my cancer markers have been at 2.0 for a year.

Brief Answer: Carcinoma colon Detailed Answer: Dear XXXXX, You are getting the most advanced treatment for your stage 4Colon Cancer. I will congratulate you that your tumor which had spread to liver has subsided. Avastin is the latest drug for it in addition to the normal 48hr. chemotherapy. If your doctor says that there is complete suppression of the tumor in the colon as well as the liver you can increase the duration of the treatment for maintaining the suppression. There is no role of radiation in metastatic colonic malignancies. Herbal Medicine consisting of wheat Grass capsules is claimed to have a very good maintainacne role. You can have it in addition to your chemotherapy whose duration can be increased subject to the approval by your doctor. I will again say that you are fortunate that your tumor has disappeared. Truly, Dr. j. Ticku
