Posted on Fri, 11 Jul 2014
Question: My husband was bitten by a spider while under the house. Did not see it but reaction was pretty quick. 2 puncture holes and a red circle. applied vinegar and took Benadryl. 3 days later the circle of red is warm and about 6 inches in diameter. He has type II diabetes and I am worried if he is not.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of infection and antibiotic treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read your query in detail.
Spider bites are usually not dangerous to life of a person but needs proper care and treatment.
Following measures are advised in case of spider bites soon after
1. Clean the bite with mild soap and water.
2. Apply cold packs to the bite, to reduce pain and inflammation.
3. If the bite is on an extremity such as an arm or leg, keep it elevated.
4. Take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.
5. Observe the bite for signs of infection.

As he has taken Benadryl and cortisone cream it must have helped in limiting the problem but because he is diabetic, there is a greater chance of the area getting infected. The presence of redness and warmth in the area can be due to an infection. This needs consultation with a doctor and prescribing a broad spectrum antibiotics to prevent infections and control it.

Your doctor may also recommend a tetanus booster shot if he hasnt taken one in the last five years.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
