Suggest Treatment For Speech Difficulties

Question: Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX only please.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX I am just really so freaked out right now. I contacted you earlier about speech and issues related to my tongue just not functioning properly. The urgent care doctor told me that I needed to go to the ER. I had a CT scan and everything was clear with that, but now I am afraid of ALS or MS. The spasms are extremely mild, but they have not gone away. I have an appointment with my doctor on Friday, but am going a bit crazy with the thought of a degenerative neurological disease. Again, I am 46 year old female. They only other strange physical event that I am having is twitching in my left toes. If there is anything that you can tell me to ease my mind, I would be completely grateful. I have no family history of MS or ALS.

Brief Answer:
no need to panic

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your follow up question.
I am glad that you have had the CT scan and that it was normal. This is a sign that there is unlikely anything major going on in your brain. What you are describing does not sound like ALS at all so you can put that out of your mind. ALS involves motor neurons so would not present with the type of speech problems you describe. I do not think that the twitching in your left toes is related to your speech difficulties. It is possible that MS will need to be ruled out with further testing but having the normal CT scan is reassuring in many ways. I know this is frightening but staying as calm as possible will be helpful to you. This may turn out to be nothing serious, you just will have to go through the process of making sure there are no major problems, then deal with the findings as they are discovered. I think it is entirely possible that there will be no major problems found and the issue will resolve on its own.
Do some calming things like taking a walk, listening to soothing music or taking a long bath.
Best regards to you,
Dr. Robinson
