Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Swallowing Difficulty, Fever, Headache, Sneezing And Runny Nose

Question: I just returned from Jamaica very ill. My symptoms have been: fever (as high as 101.5), an extreme sore throat with trouble swallowing (worse on left side), body aches all over from fever, headache that comes and goes varying in severity, a little sneezing, very running nose and congested sinuses. In addition, I have the painful sensation that the left side of my mouth - including the inner cheek and gums and inner lips - are filled with a million tiny blisters. It is burning and painful. There are no visible sores. It looks inflamed (as does my tongue), but nothing more than that. I feel a similar pain in my left nostril and left throat. My left eye is a bit weepy. There is a clear demarcation down the center of my face - there are none of these strange symptoms are not on the right side of my face or in my mouth. I am craving eating cold food - sorbet (which is very unusual for me), but otherwise have not had much appetite. No stomach symptoms. No neck pain. No visible rash. I was in a location where the Zika virus is fairly rampant. I did protect myself, but got about 8 mosquito bites while there. I know my symptoms aren't typical Zika, but thought I would include that info. I am not pregnant. I am 47 year old female. I was diagosed with Flu A in early December. it took the whole month to recover. Before I left for Jamaica I felt strong and healthy. I have gone to a doctor here. I do not have the flu now - results were negative. They could not diagnose me. I wasn't having the mouth symptoms yet. They cultured me for strep throat which I will get the results for in a few days. The onset of this illness occurred while I was in Jamaica a few days ago. It appeared like the very beginning of a cold. it took about 24 hours from the time I noticed body aches, headache, and fatigue for the runny nose/ sneezing to start. Next came the sore throat which rapidly worsened. Not sure when the fever onset but know I had it as of yesterday morning. The mouth / face issues arose yesterday afternoon.

Brief Answer:
Viral infection complicated with angina (strep throat)...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concern.

Your symptoms are typical for a viral infection with body aches, headaches, fatigue, runny nose/sneezing, and fever. Sore throat and fever are indicating for possible strep throat which is often a complication of the viral infection of the upper respiratory tract.

A course of antibiotics are needed to start after you take the oral swab culture report. Do not forget to tell your doctor that you are allergic to Keflex, so he/she would prescribe other types of antibiotics of other groups (non cephalosporins).

If I was your caring doctor, would advise to check your ears too as viral infections are often associated with ear infections too.

Apart antibiotics, probiotics are recommended together with gargling with warm water and salt.

Hope this helps. Wish fast recovery.

Thank you. Your analysis concurs with the doctor I saw here. However, that was prior to the accute and prolonged pain in my mouth and left nostril. I've had quite a few infections / flus, etc in my life and never symptoms like this. Please comment.

Brief Answer:
Explained below...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,

Ok, then, if you have acute, prolonged pain in mouth and left nostril, sinusitis (sinus infection) should be considered and correctly treated with antibiotics as per swab culture testing reports.

Altogether, nostril/mouth/ear infections are correlated with either viral or bacterial infection.

Apart symptomatic treatment you are currently taking, antibiotics should be added too to my opinion.
Hope this helped.
