Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Severe Laryngitis And Diarrhea

Question: Yes, thy. I've been sick for almost 4 weeks. Started with diahreah which continues intermittently. Then sore throat and severe laryngitis for 10 days. Continuing now with persistent cough and green mucus. Doc Di not examine me - too busy. But gave me z pack which gave me severe diahreah & he said to stop. Still coughing with green mucus and very tired. That's the whole ball of wax. Thanks.

I appreciate your concern

Azithromycin can cause GI side effects like diarrhea especially if its taken in a single high dose. You should complete the a pack dose and should not leave it in between. Replace fluid deficit by drinking isotonic fluids such as Gastrolyte or ORS. Productive cough with greenish sputum indicates a lower respiratory tract infection. If there is associated fever then chest x ray, CBC, ESR , blood urea can be advised to look for evidence of pneumonia or possible focus of infection. Stool and urine examination can also be done in this regard. Blood cultures should be taken and empiric antibiotics can be changed to amoxicillin clavulanate or a combination of cefixime and azithromycin, accordingly. Mucolytics such as mucolator ( n acetylcysteine) can also be used along with steam inhalation to thin out the secretions.

One last question: would I be contagious to a 2 month old baby who just recovered from bronchiolitis? We r planning a visit tomorrow.
