Question: 2nd day with sore throat and sore upper chest; tonsils swollen; age 75 female; had lunch with friend who is always sick with deep chest cough; peeked with flashlight and can't see red spots as when I had bad strep about 40 years ago; when I cough, small amounts of clear phlegm, this morning with slight yellow streak. Aspirin reduces the discomfort. Just a nasty throat and chest cold or ....?

Brief Answer:
It looks like an infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Considering the fact that your symptoms have developed fast and your tonsils are swollen it looks like that you have an infection and may need antibiotics for it. This can be further reinforced with the fact that you have yellow streaked phlegm, which is a definite sign of infection.

Soreness of the upper chest may be due to spreading of the infection to your chest/lungs and in this situation i would strongly advice you to seek medical treatment immediately before you develop a full blown chest infection.

In my patients i normally start AMOXCILLIN 500MG three times a day and chlorhexidine gargles 3 times a day.

In addition i would like you to take steam inhalation 3-4 times a day as this will help clear up your chest.

Get well soon!!

Thank you ... I'll contact my doctor today ... this morning, I began to think that vitamin C and aspirin and gargling wasn't going to be enough.

Brief Answer:
Meeting your doctor would be a good idea

Detailed Answer:
Hello

You can definitely continue vitamin C, but that alone may not suffice and it would be better to meet your doctor and get yourself examined.

Take care!
